Taormina Known as the "Pearl of the Mediterranean”, Taormina is one of the most celebrated resorts in the world with a distinctly late medieval character and an intriguing network of small streets and alleyways which host a marvellous selection of pavement cafés, elegant shops, restaurants and bars. A luxuriant “macchia” covers the heights above the town, interspersed with dark cypresses, olive trees, pines, palm trees and cacti. Orange and lemon trees fill the air with their unforgettable Mediterranean scent. The town centre is home to a large number of buildings and relics of historical interest from the Greek and Roman periods, including the stunning Greco-Roman amphitheatre (only 5 minutes walk away from the villa, photo at right), which is also the venue for the famous Taormina Art Festival in the summer, with its fantastic programme of international music, theatre, art, opera, dance and movies.
Within easy reach of Taormina is Mount Etna volcano (30 mins drive) for a cool day immersed in nature (including the stunning golf course Il Picciolo with spectacular and scenic views for all 18 holes, set among among oaks, hazels and vineyards), the medieval village of Castelmola (10 mins) with its narrow streets and breathtaking views, Alcantara valley with its magnificent gorges (15 mins), and Catania (40 mins) with its elegant shops and historical buildings and monuments. |
